I took this photo in Paris on a November early morning. I published it in a note previously, but I thought it would be good to explain it.
What attracted me to the scene is that the two people seemed to really enjoy the sun. It wasn’t hot on that morning, but the sun was trying to appear from behind the clouds and it was creating some heat.
As I was shooting square, I decided to roughly centre the subjects. They’re not quite centred because I wanted to include the chairs (and not cut bits of them with the side of the photo) to frame them as well. So I picked an angle where that could be done.
As usual, I tried to include some triangles: the chairs and the subject create one, the water pond creates another. I thought about ways to create another triangle with the buildings in the background but didn’t find one.
In the background I kept the people and the buildings in focus to add context (it’s clearly Jardin des Tuileries) and depth/layers.
I didn’t have much time to take this photo because the next second the subject on the left dropped her phone and then started using it, and to me that ruined the moment. I used my phone and had only one shot at it.
What I don’t like about it is that building at the back seems to come up at an angle. That’s due to the angle of the phone and I didn’t have time to check it before the scene was gone.
