Crovie

I took this photo in Crovie, on the Northern coast of Scotland. It’s a tiny fishing village stuck between a cliff and the sea.

Crovie main street

Crovie is very interesting and quiet out of season (this was February).

When I took the photo, I placed the horizon, which is the top of the far cliff, roughly on a third.

One of the things that attracted me to that point of view are the many triangles in the scene. Primates like to think in triangles, so they’re pleasant to the eye. The main triangles I spotted on location were the street, the village, and the coastline.

Another thing that attracted me were the textures (on the wall on the left, the concrete on the ground, and the gravel). They were perfect for monochrome and you can spend a long time exploring them in the photo.

To finalise the shot, I framed the crab basket at the bottom on a third for foreground interest.

Photo explained

The boat chimney along the wall was another point of interest for me. But I’m not happy with where it is in the frame. It seems to break the flow of the image. I would have loved to have it in the foreground where the baskets are and turned the other way.
