Further on the last photo, here is one of the photos I took during the day in bright sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photographing in bright August sunlight isn’t what you normally do in landscape photography: the light is harsh, the tones flat, the whole scene is uninteresting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I wanted to do two things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Force myself to take photos in uncomfortable conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Try a panorama.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    I had a discussion on Substack recently about the way taking photos in the middle of a sunlit day is challenging and not often done in landscape photography. And Indeed it’s rare. But I wanted to take on the challenge and find a way to take a photo that still worked under those conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The reason I wanted to try a panorama is that I wanted to experiment with a medium format effect. So this image is a blend of 15 photos, all taken at f\/16 (it’s gigantic with a 21MP sensor). Hence the square format. I think I should have increased the aperture to maybe f\/4 to increase the effect, but I didn’t want to end up with huts not in focus, which was hard to check on the screen since I didn’t know how I’d stitch the panorama in the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    That effect is also why I kept the grass out of focus instead of keeping everything properly focused as I normally do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I still think the photo works. I put the main hut in the middle of the frame on purpose because I knew I wanted a square frame in the end. That’s also why the horizon is centered. I like the overall feel despite, and maybe because, of the harsh light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
